Methodology
The basket is a list of everyday staples. Each staple is matched, by name and exact pack size, to one specific product (shown under each line); supermarket house brands and look-alike variants (sugar-free, flavoured, multipacks and the like) are left out, and a staple with no exact match is listed as "not matched" rather than swapped for a different product. We price the products from the supermarkets' own websites: Woolworths every day, Pak'nSave & New World weekly (usually Tuesday, soon after their weekly specials change). An item only counts toward the totals when the same product is matched at all three chains. Prices are from Auckland stores; Pak'nSave and New World prices can be up to a week old (each chain's check date is shown above), and all prices can differ in-store – treat the index as indicative, and always check at the checkout. Week-on-week changes compare each chain with its own check about a week earlier, and only when the basket held exactly the same products both times. Questions or data requests: hello@kaiching.co.nz.
